Teaching Healthy Choices

Within each food group, there is a wide variety of choices-some more nutritious than others. Rather than defining foods as "good," "bad," "healthy" or "unhealthy," classify foods as "anytime" or "sometimes" foods. Doing so promotes positive messaging and encourages consumption of healthy foods from all four food groups to help children grow and feel great.

"Anytime" foods are:
  • Rich in vitamins, minerals and other nutrients
  • Foods that are lower in fat, salt and sugar
  • To be enjoyed at any time as part of a balanced eating pattern
  • Foods such as milk, fruit, bread and beans
"Sometimes" foods are:
  • Higher in calories, sugar, fat or salt
  • To be consumed only occasionally
  • Foods such as fried foods, baked goods, ice cream and deli meats
