Canada's Food Guide
Canada's Food Guide provides recommendations for how much and what type of food we should eat every day from each of the four food groups:
- Vegetables and Fruit
- Grain Products
- Milk and Alternatives
- Meat and Alternatives
Teaching about Mixed Foods
Foods are classified into the four food groups based on similarity of agricultural base and traditional classification and usage of the food.
Foods within each food group also contain similar nutrients that contribute to an overall healthy eating pattern.
A great way for your students to learn about food classification is to identify food groups found in favourite meals or mixed dishes (two or more food groups combined).
Example: Pizza
Crust = Grain Products
Vegetable toppings and tomato sauce = Vegetables and Fruit
Mozzarella cheese = Milk and Alternatives
Meat toppings = Meat and Alternatives
